  • Improving Scientific Input to Global Policymaking with a focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals
    IAP for Policy, in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), and with support from Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY), is undertaking a three year project that will be framed around the global science community’s contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The advent of the SDGs provides an important opportunity to examine the landscape of global scientific advice and identify approaches that have been successful as well as gaps and opportunities for improvement.

    Led by IAP member the National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, Argentina, in partnership with Academies of Science of Colombia, Mexico and Guatemala, the program will work to improve the level and the relevance of science education through the active participation of science academies and the most prominent scientists in all nations working together with teachers and educational authorities to create new national programs for science education, and share best practice and experiences.

    Academy of Sciences of Guatemala, in partnership with the Academia de Ciencias Fisicas, Matematicas y Naturales de Venezuela and the Nicaraguan Academy of Sciences (ACN), this project will establish a working group on surface water management for the region to share research findings and national experiences and share methodologies and technologies used. The project will in particular establish methodologies to evaluate and prevent pollution of surface water and to increase the efficiency of its use.
  • Completed
    Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia (AASA), this project will implement activities to promote national and regional water demand management (WDM) and water supply management (WSM) strategies, with focus on the appropriate balancing of WSM and WDM, awareness raising amongst decision makers on the benefits of a comprehensive approach combining the two, and facilitating knowledge exchanges and partnership building.

    Polish Academy of Sciences, in partnership with Academies of Science of Hungary, Israel and Slovakia, as well as a European network of IAP members (EASAC), the project aims to bring together the work of the IAP water programme and the LTER Europe to forge a common strategy for development of observatories, research, and infrastructure, monitoring long-term consequences, and investigating critical thresholds for socio-ecological systems.

    Mexican Academy of Sciences with Academies of Science of Brazil and Argentina, this project aims to build the championship by IAP member academies of water management issues in their home countries and share experiences and knowledge, especially on sustainable management of urban water cycles.

    Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) as well as the African network of IAP members (NASAC). Water is a fundamental but diminishing resource for the world’s growing population. This project aims to promote understanding of the state of water resources in southern Africa and make recommendations for future planning and policymaking in the region.

    Nigerian Academy of Science, in partnership with the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS), and their respective Ministries of Health, this project is part of a long-term programme aimed at involving academies of health in national efforts to achieve the UN MDGs relating to maternal and child health. The intention is also to show the capacity of academies to convene relevant stakeholders working towards a national goal and thus underline the key role academies can play in providing scientific advice to their governments on this important issue.

    Led by the network of IAP members in the Americas and individual IAP member academies in the US, Brazil and Mexico, this project will implement the work plan produced last year to promote the role of science and technology in forging a sustainable energy future in the region.

    Led by IAP member KAST (Korean Academy of Science and Technology) in partnership with the Thailand Academy of Sciences, this project aims to assist developing countries in Asia to improving their ability to respond to climate changes by building voluntary green house gas reduction infrastructures and systems based on successful experience in Korea and elsewhere.

    IAP helps build the capacities of young academies, particularly those in developing countries, to strengthen their role in providing independent advice to governments on issues of national and global concern. The programme has led to the creation of regional networks of science academies in Africa, the Americas and among member states of the OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference).
