Building capacities in surface water management in Central America Completed Academy of Sciences of Guatemala, in partnership with the Academia de Ciencias Fisicas, Matematicas y Naturales de Venezuela and the Nicaraguan Academy of Sciences (ACN), this project will establish a working group on surface water management for the region to share research findings and national experiences and share methodologies and technologies used. The project will in particular establish methodologies to evaluate and prevent pollution of surface water and to increase the efficiency of its use.
Water supply management and water demand management Completed Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia (AASA), this project will implement activities to promote national and regional water demand management (WDM) and water supply management (WSM) strategies, with focus on the appropriate balancing of WSM and WDM, awareness raising amongst decision makers on the benefits of a comprehensive approach combining the two, and facilitating knowledge exchanges and partnership building.

Water is a fundamental but diminishing resource for the world’s growing population. This project aims to promote understanding of the state of water resources in southern Africa and make recommendations for future planning and policymaking in the region.
Pilot project for a needs assessment study to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality in developing countries Completed Nigerian Academy of Science, in partnership with the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS), and their respective Ministries of Health, this project is part of a long-term programme aimed at involving academies of health in national efforts to achieve the UN MDGs relating to maternal and child health. The intention is also to show the capacity of academies to convene relevant stakeholders working towards a national goal and thus underline the key role academies can play in providing scientific advice to their governments on this important issue.

Capacity Building for Young Academies Programme Completed IAP helps build the capacities of young academies, particularly those in developing countries, to strengthen their role in providing independent advice to governments on issues of national and global concern. The programme has led to the creation of regional networks of science academies in Africa, the Americas and among member states of the OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference).
