IAMP EC Meeting (Berlin 17 October 2014)

The IAMP Executive Committee (EC) met in Berlin, Germany (17 October 2014) in conjunction with the IAMP Young Physician Leaders Programme ( YPL ) on  18 – 19 October  and the World Health Summit  (WHS) on  19 – 22 October 2014.

The EC discussed the proposed InterAcademy partnership between IAP – global network of science academies, IAMP and IAC – the interAcademy Council. The Partnership for Health was also the topic of a workshop under the ‘Education and Leadership’ theme of the World Health Summit. The EC working Committee on the Strategic Plan was tasked to invite member academies to provide input on implementation of the  current projects and activities.

The  EC committee on statements will be working on a new document concerning Health Care on Hearing Loss and academies will soon be contacted for their participation in the expert working group.

Arrangements are on-going for a workshop in Beijing, China on “Exploring Traditional Medicine” . A call for abstracts will be circulated shortly.

The YPL workshop was held on 18 & 19 October 2014 and a report was posted online (http://www.iamp-online.org/content/iamp-young-physician-leader-workshop) Nominated by IAMP member academies and selected by the Executive Committee, the 20 young physicians from 16 countries were joined by four alumni from previous editions. Prior to the workshop, on Friday 17 October, the group was also treated to a visit to the laboratories of Bayer Healthcare and the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, specially arranged by the Bayer Foundation, a major sponsor of the IAMP YPL programme.

Lakmali Amarasiri, a YPL alumna from Sri Lanka, was invited to provide some opening remarks on behalf of the YPL at the World Health Summit (WHS) and she chose to focus her comments on the 'brain drain' of trained health professionals from developing countries. The WHS held a special session on the current epidemic of Ebola in western Africa and 3 German academies German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), and the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities issued a Call for Action on the issue (http://www.leopoldina.org/en/press/news/akademien-fordern-konsequenzen-aus-der-ebolavirus-epidemie/)
