Dr Sean Wasserman is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town. He currently has an appointment as a senior research officer at the Wellcome Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Africa.
Dr Wasserman’s main research area is on the use of new and repurposed drugs for tuberculosis, with a focus on pharmacokinetics and resistance. Other areas of interest include pneumocystis pneumonia and antibiotic stewardship. He is a member of the South African Antibiotic Stewardship Program National Working Group, where he led the development of widely-used national antibiotic guidelines. In 2016 he was recognised as an Emerging Leader in International Infectious Diseases by the International Society for Infectious Diseases.
Dr Wasserman completed his medical degree as well as post-graduate training at the University of Cape Town. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Infectious Diseases at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
