Ongoing Food and Nutrition Security and Agriculture Posted Date12/06/2017 The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the InterAcademy Partnership are undertaking a project on ‘Food and Nutrition Security and Agriculture'. Supported by IAP for Science, the project is almost exclusively funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as the project on ‘Strengthening the Global Network of Science Academies (IAP) - Global and regional statements on food and nutrition security and agriculture’. IAP is also providing financial support, while some IAP member academies and the affiliated regional networks are providing in-kind support. At a time of increasing pressures from population growth, climate change, social and economic inequity and instability, the continuing need to avoid further loss in ecosystem biodiversity, and pressures on other critical resources (such as water and energy), there are major challenges in delivering food and nutrition security. Ongoing Evaluating Research: Assessment and Improvement of Current Practices Posted Date10/13/2017 The IAPartnership will undertake an evidence-based study of current research evaluation practices across the sciences. It is one of the three projects identified by the IAPartnership for implementation starting in 2015. As the global research enterprise has grown, so too has the demand for more formal judgements with which to evaluate research. The current system of scientific publishing and advances in information technology has led to sophisticated techniques and metrics to assess the quality of both journal articles and researchers. In recent years, however, criticisms of current research evaluation practices have emerged. Critics have found that journal-based metrics may create perverse incentives that lead researchers to cut corners or use questionable methods that undermine the advancement of science, as well as leading to distortions, eg. in career and promotion opportunities.
