Biography
As Director of External Projects at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Arlen Hastings is responsible for STEM initiatives that complement the Institute’s core mission. Her IAS outreach efforts began in 1998 when she co-founded the Science Initiative Group (SIG), which created and ran programs to develop scientific capacity in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. She was SIG’s executive director through March 2017. By then SIG had transferred to the beneficiary countries responsibility for the programs it had incubated, most recently the Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE) in sub-Saharan Africa. In her current role, Ms. Hastings remains involved with RISE as its US liaison; she is a member of the IAP for Research Secretariat, working on its projects on Harnessing Science, Engineering and Medicine to Address Africa’s Challenges and Improving Scientific Input to Global Policymaking; and she administers a national program, Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE Math). Ms. Hastings has been a senior administrator at the Institute for Advanced Study since 1992. She had worked previously at the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), where her responsibilities included organizing US-Soviet academic conferences. She holds an A.B. in anthropology and Russian studies from Princeton University.
