IAP Global Webinar ‘Academies of science and medicine: Actions to advance urban health’

MAPBOX

The global and national focus on cities has been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic, not only for what concerns its impact on urban public health and healthcare systems, but also on urban planning and space use, public transport, housing, socioeconomic development and health disparities in vulnerable communities.

As cities and countries move through the epidemic, seeking lessons learned that can be applied to “building back better” across sectors within cities and nations, the InterAcademy Partneship (IAP) carried out a systematic review of current work by national academies of science and medicine on the broad determinants of urban health. The key findings of the study, plus recommendations, will be presented.

Prof. Jo Ivey Boufford, Chair of IAP-Urban Health Working Group will introduce the project carried out by the IAP, followed by presentations on three main activities in the broad field of urban health:

1. Brief on academies’ activities on urban health: conclusions, project challenges, indicative opportunities for academies in urban health and its broader determinants (Sally Fawkes,  Independent Health Policy Consultant)

2. Presentation on ‘Sustainable Communities’, an SSEC Global Goals community research guide (Carol O’Donnel, Director, Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC), Washington DC, USA)

3. IAP Statement on Implications of Urbanization in Low- and- Middle- Income Countries (Locana Gunaratna, National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka; Chair of the Working Group for the above IAP Statement)

The presentations will be followed by the discussion/Q&A .
