Biography

Prof. J. M. Sanz-Serna was born in Valladolid (Spain) in 1953. He holds an MS on Numerical Analysis from the University of Dundee (Scotland) and a PhD in Functional Analysis from the University of Valladolid. He has worked at the University of the Basque Country and, from 1982 to 2014, at the University of Valladolid, where he was Rector between 1996 and 2022. Since 2014, he holds a chair of excellence at University Carlos III de Madrid. His main interests are in numerical análisis with emphasis on the solution of differential equations (ordinary or partial, deterministic or stochastic) and Monte Carlo methods. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), in both instances in the inaugural class. He received the inaugural Dahlquist Prize from SIAM, the Iberdrola Prize of Science and Technology, the Castilla y Leon research prize, and the Gold Medal of the Mathematical Society of Spain. He was inducted into the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain in 2007, where he has served as President of the Mathematics Section from 2012 to 2018 and President since 2018.
