A Scientific Call for COP30: Science Academies United for Climate Action

MAPBOX

The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), in collaboration with the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS), is proud to announce the satellite event “A Scientific Call for COP30: Science Academies United for Climate Action”, which will take place from October 20 to 22, 2025, in Manaus, Brazil.

This major scientific gathering precedes the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), scheduled for November 10–21, 2025, in Belém do Pará. COP30 will convene global leaders, scientists, NGOs, and civil society to negotiate and adopt international agreements to advance climate action, with particular focus on adaptation strategies for vulnerable nations.

The Manaus satellite event will bring together leading national and international researchers, representatives from academies of sciences in the Amazonian countries, and other global institutions engaged in Amazon research and climate issues. Discussions will address urgent themes such as:

  • Adaptation to climate change
  • Forest and biodiversity conservation
  • Climate justice and social impacts
  • International scientific cooperation

A key highlight will be the thematic session 'Rethinking Tomorrow: Can We Truly Build a Sustainable Climate Future?', featuring Prof. Robin Fears, Consultant at the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), as a distinguished speaker.

The event will culminate in a joint statement of recommendations prepared by the participating organizations, aimed at informing and influencing COP30 negotiations. By uniting the voices of science academies worldwide, the initiative seeks to amplify the role of science in shaping climate policies and sustainable futures.
