World Conference on Basic Sciences and Sustainable Development

Following the initiative of the Union for Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the General Conference of UNESCO proposed in November 2019 to proclaim the year of 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD 2022). In December 2021, the UN General Assembly approved the proposal.

One of the main events within IYBSSD 2022 will be the World Conference on Basic Sciences and Sustainable Development, which will be held on 20–22 September 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia. The institutions organizing the Conference are UNESCO, the World Academy of Art and Science, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Club of Rome, the Serbian Association of Economists, the World University Consortium, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of Serbia, and the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade.

The agenda of the Conference will include the sections: Importance of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development; Advanced Basic Research in Mathematics and Physics; Advanced Basic Research in Chemistry and Biology; Advanced Multiple Disciplinary Basic Research; Connections of Basic Sciences with Other Sciences, Innovation, and Engineering; Contributions of Basic Sciences to Medicine, Healthcare, and Water and Food Security; Connections of Basic Sciences with Energy Technologies, Climate Action, and Protection of the Environment; Contributions of Basic Sciences to Advanced Education; and For Women in Science.
