IANAS Water Program advances sustainable sanitation agenda in the Peruvian Amazon

Environment & Climate

The Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) has advanced its work on sustainable water management through a series of activities in the Peruvian Amazon held in June 2026. Organised under the IANAS Amazon Initiative, the programme brought together researchers, policymakers, local authorities and community representatives to explore science-based solutions for water and sanitation. The activities formed part of the project Water, Forests and Sand: Ecosystem Health and Human Health, which promotes closer links between environmental protection, public health and sustainable development. Discussions focused on nature-based sanitation solutions that can improve access to safe wastewater treatment while responding to the needs of rural and remote communities.

The programme included a conference in Lima, field visits in the Peruvian Amazon and meetings with local partners. It concluded with a public lecture at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon, where researchers and students explored recent developments in wastewater management and sanitation technologies.

The initiative reflects IANAS' commitment to strengthening regional scientific collaboration and supporting evidence-informed approaches to improve environmental and public health across the Americas.
