In 2007, TWAS launched, with the support of its five Regional Partners, the TWAS Young Affiliates Programme to recognize outstanding scientists under the age of 40. Each year, up to 25 Young Affiliates are selected to represent their countries for a period of six years, after which they transition to Alumni status. To date, the programme has built a vibrant community of global scientific leaders dedicated to advancing research and innovation in the developing world. To sustain collaboration and amplify the impact of this community, the TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN) was established in 2016. TYAN brings together both Young Affiliates and Alumni, fostering scientific leadership through international, regional, and national initiatives that promote interdisciplinary research, science diplomacy, and capacity building across the global South.TYAN is guided by an Executive Committee that provides strategic direction and oversees its activities. The network’s work is driven through four flagship programmes:

  • TYAN Collaborative Grant Award (TCGA): Supports visits to other institutions to enhance research collaboration and leadership.
  • TYAN International Thematic Workshop (TITO): Promotes multidisciplinary research and scientific exchange through regional workshops.
  • TEACH 4 SD: Provides hands-on training in sustainable development for postgraduate students in developing countries.

Mission: To catalyze interdisciplinary research and development collaborations to address global challenges. Vision: A world connected by scientific cooperation.

Mid/long term goal: Supporting the closure of the gap in Science/Technology/Innovation between South-North

Objectives: Foster South-South and South-North collaborations among early-career scientists. Bridge the scientific, technological, and innovation divide. Promote science education and public understanding of science in the developing world.
