Biography

Dr Avela Majavu works as a Research and Development Chemist at the Sibanye Stillwater Precious Metal Refinery in South Africa, where her expertise is instrumental in advancing the processes of precious metal extraction and refining. In recognition of her ground-breaking work and societal impact, Dr Majavu was named one of The Feature Magazine's 50 Most Memorable Women, and in 2024, she was honoured with the Power of Women in Mining Award by Mail & Guardian. Dr Majavu previously served on the Women in Mining South Africa Subcommittee. In 2023, she took on a pivotal role as the Coordinator of the Black Women in Science (BWIS) Fellowship, fostering the development of future leaders in STEM through mentorship and community-building. Dr Majavu currently serves as the co-chair of the South African Young Academy of Science.
