Saja Al Zoubi

Professor Al Zoubi is a development economist whose research explores the intersections of gender, forced migration, and development, particularly in conflict and post-conflict settings. Her work emphasizes women’s empowerment and resilience among displaced and marginalized communities. Since the onset of the Syrian conflict in 2011, Dr. Al Zoubi has focused on improving livelihoods, food security, and economic opportunities for refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and women-headed households. Her research also examines gender-based violence, youth engagement, education, and host-country policies influencing refugee integration and economic participation.
At Dalhousie University’s Department of International Development Studies in Canada, Dr. Al Zoubi teaches courses in development studies and data analysis. She co-leads the Global Young Academy’s At-Risk Scholars Initiative and serves on the steering committee of the Science in Exile Initiative and the International Science Council’s scientific committee. Her prior academic roles include Lecturer at the University of Oxford, Visiting Professor at the University of Glasgow, and Lecturer at Saint Mary’s University.
Beyond academia, she has consulted for organizations such as UN Women, the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders, and the EU Delegation to Syria. With over a decade of experience, she is an advocate for gender equality, peacebuilding, and academic freedom worldwide.
