Vytautas Nekrošius
Academician Prof. Dr habil. Vytautas Nekrošius (LL.M Frankfurt/M)
President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences for the term of 2026–2030
Vytautas Nekrošius was born on 10 June 1970 in Vilnius. Since 1993, he has been working at the Department of Private Law of the Faculty of Law at Vilnius University. In 1996, he defended his doctoral dissertation ‘Forms of Control over the Legality and Validity of Court Decisions’. In 2003, he obtained the doctor habilis degree at the University of Łódź in Poland (thesis theme: ‘Civil Procedure: The Principle of Concentration and Its Implementation Possibilities). He undertook study visits at the universities of Warsaw, Kiel, Münster, Frankfurt am Main J.W. Goethe, and the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg. From 2018 to 2023, Vytautas Nekrošius was professeur extraordinaire at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Szczecin (Republic of Poland).
His research interests include civil procedure law, EU civil procedure law, and Roman private law. Apart from his native Lithuanian, he knows Polish, German, Russian, and English.
Prof. Nekrošius has been a full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences since 2011. Since 2022, he has been the chair of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. From 2002 to 2012, he was the dean of the Faculty of Law at Vilnius University. In 2004, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania, and in 2021 – the 1st degree badge of distinction ‘For services to the judicial system’. From 2016 to 2019, he was the chair of the Lithuanian Lawyers’ Association, from 2017 to 2023 – a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. He has authored over 100 scientific works and is one of the developers of the new Code of Civil Procedure of the Republic of Lithuania. Prof. Vytautas Nekrošius is an active participant in the reform of the court, notary, the bar association, and bailiff systems.
