Strengthening Biosecurity: BWC Pathogen Detection Training Open to Early-Career Scientists

The BWC Implementation Support Unit (ISU), in partnership with ICGEB and supported by Norway, is offering the 2026 BWC Training in Pathogen Detection and Biosecurity from 4–8 May 2026 at the ICGEB laboratory in Trieste, Italy.

The training targets early- and mid-career scientists from OECD/DAC list of ODA recipient countries working in human, animal, or plant health, with experience in molecular biology or pathogen diagnostics. Participants must have experience in BSL-2 laboratories or equivalent, and working knowledge of PCR and diagnostic equipment. Female applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.

Training objectives include:

  • Understanding the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC)
  • Strengthening biosecurity, diagnostics, and outbreak preparedness skills
  • Hands-on training in qRT-PCR, LAMP, genomic surveillance, and bioinformatics
  • Learning biosecurity risk assessment and mitigation
  • Understanding Dual-Use Research (DUR), Dual-Use Research of Concern (DURC), and Responsible Use of Life Sciences (RULS)

This training strengthens national and international capacity in biosecurity and laboratory safety, supporting Article X of the BWC and fostering a new generation of scientists equipped to address biological threats responsibly.
