The Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the 5th Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize. This prestigious award honors individuals with outstanding achievements in Medical Research and Medical Services aimed at combating infectious and other diseases in Africa. The deadline for nominations is 20 September 2024.
The prize celebrates the remarkable contributions to medical research and services in Africa.
About the Prize
The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize was established to perpetuate the ideals of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, a renowned Japanese microbiologist who dedicated his life to researching yellow fever in Africa and ultimately succumbed to the disease. The Prize aims to recognize significant contributions to medical research and services that enhance health and welfare in Africa and globally. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prize's mission holds even greater significance.
Scope of the Prize
The Prize is awarded in two categories:
- Medical Research: This includes basic and clinical medical research as well as research in life sciences closely related to medicine.
- Medical Services: This encompasses field-level medical and public health activities designed to combat diseases and improve public health.
Nomination and Award Details
Nomination Deadline: 20 September 2024
Prize Components: Each laureate will receive a citation, a medal, and a monetary award of 100 million yen.
Announcement of Laureates: The laureates will be announced during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), scheduled to be held in Yokohama in 2025.
