The Brazilian Academy of Sciences will host its Magna Meeting 2026 from 5 to 7 May at the Museum of Tomorrow under the theme 'Ocean of Tomorrow: Science for a Planet in Balance'.
As the Academy’s largest annual gathering, the meeting will bring together leading scientists from Brazil and abroad to examine the central role of the oceans in shaping the future of the planet. Discussions will explore how ocean systems influence climate regulation, biodiversity, food resources, biotechnology, and renewable energy.
The meeting aligns with the goals of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which calls for stronger scientific knowledge to guide ocean stewardship. Participants will address urgent challenges including ocean warming, acidification, pollution, overfishing, and the pressures linked to deep-sea activities. The programme will also explore how science can inform governance, legal frameworks as well as public policy that support responsible ocean management.
The three-day event will feature keynote lectures, plenary discussions and debates that connect scientific knowledge with innovation and decision-making. By bringing together experts from different fields, the meeting aims to deepen understanding of how science can support balanced and sustainable use of ocean resources.
