The Abel Prize recognizes outstanding scientific work in the field of mathematics, including mathematical aspects of computer science, mathematical physics, probability, numerical analysis and scientific computing, statistics, and also applications of mathematics in the sciences.

The Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters awarded the Abel Prize for 2015 to the American mathematicians John F. Nash Jr. and Louis Nirenberg for striking and seminal contributions to the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations and its applications to geometric analysis.
In Memoriam
After memorable days at the Abel Prize ceremony in Oslo and Abel Prize lectures in Oslo and Bergen, John Forbes Nash Jr. and his wife Alicia Nash passed away on 25 May 2015 in a tragic car accident on their journey home.
