Call for Nominations: UNESCO–Al Fozan International Prize for Young Scientists in STEM

Outstanding young scientists working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are invited to apply for the third edition of the UNESCO–Al Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in STEM. Nominations and applications are open until 30 November 2026.

Awarded every two years, the Prize recognizes exceptional young researchers whose work advances scientific research, STEM education or international scientific cooperation while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Five laureates, representing Africa, the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and North America, and Latin America and the Caribbean, will each receive USD 50,000, together with a medal and diploma.

Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the application deadline and demonstrate outstanding achievements in one or more of the following areas:

  • Research in STEM, including emerging technologies;
  • STEM education, innovation and science communication; or
  • International or regional cooperation in STEM.

UNESCO strongly encourages the nomination of young women scientists as part of its commitment to promoting gender equality in STEM.

Applications must be submitted in English or French through the online portal and must be supported by a nomination from an eligible organization. Governments, UNESCO Chairs, universities, international scientific unions and organizations in official partnership with UNESCO are among the entities eligible to nominate candidates. Self-nominations without institutional endorsement will not be considered.

The InterAcademy Partnership encourages eligible young scientists and nominating organizations across its global network to consider this opportunity to recognize scientific excellence and strengthen the next generation of STEM leaders.

Deadline: 30 November 2026
