International Day for Disaster Reduction, 13 October 2014
IAP continues to support the efforts of member academies. Members including the Indian National Science Academy, Islamic World Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of Jordan, Uganda National Academy of Sciences and others answered a survey coordinated by the STMG (Science and Technology Major Group) established by ICSU to collect key national views on the demand for greater science and information in disaster risk reduction, as well as the value and accessibility of information from existing initiatives and organizations. The feedback will be fed into the second preparatory meeting for the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (3rdWCDRR) which will take place in mid November in Geneva, where STMG will advance its proposal for an international science advisory mechanism.

IAP member, the Science Council of Japan (SCJ) has opened online registration for the Tokyo Conference on International Study for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience 'Towards a new science and technology to consolidate disaster risk reduction and sustainable development', scheduled to take place at the University of Tokyo, Japan, 14-16 January 2015. World leaders and top scientists are invited to participate in this meeting organized by SCJ, which is being held prior to the 3rdWCDRR, to discuss and formulate how the science and technology could help in disaster risk reduction and hence fostering sustainable development. The 3rdWCDRR itself will take place in Sendai, Japan, in March 2015. The successor agreement to the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA2), which will serve as the global guiding principle for the following years, is expected to be adopted on this occasion.
