Experts discuss the criteria of sustainable models as a basis for equitable wellbeing

Can our present levels and aspirations of improved wellbeing be compatible with respect to other forms of life on our planet?

On 18 September 2024, at 2:00 pm UTC, webinar speakers will explore the compatibility between human aspirations for improved wellbeing and the urgent need to respect and protect other forms of life on Earth. With international efforts to curb carbon emissions and protect biodiversity falling short of reversing global warming and ecological degradation, this webinar will focus on sustainable models of development. The session will outline essential criteria for achieving equitable wellbeing while maintaining ecological balance, emphasising the importance of respecting planetary boundaries as the foundation for global health and justice.

The international agreements to reduce carbon emissions and respect biodiversity lack the goals to reverse global warming and life depletion on our planet effectively, and even so, compliance is even lower. To set the best feasible levels of health, the only common global health goal, we need first (ecological feasibility/sustainability) to select the countries, regions and communities that respect those planetary boundaries. The second webinar in SHEM's 2024 series aims to present the criteria for sustainable models that serve as a foundation for equitable wellbeing. Join Dr. Juan Garay from SHEM, Dr. Marie Studer from the Planetary Health Alliance, Dr. Mathis Wackernagel from the Global Footprint Network, and Dr. Eduard Müller, Dean of the University for International Cooperation in Costa Rica, and gain valuable insights into how these principles can be applied to promote equitable wellbeing and foster a more just and sustainable future for all.
