There is an urgent need to fill the global leadership vacuum in order to address the complex, pressing challenges confronting humanity today. Leadership is needed at all levels and in all fields, including a redefined multilateral system inclusive of all major stakeholders, academia, civil society, business, youth etc.
The World Academy of Art & Science (WAAS) and the United Nations Office at Geneva are collaborating with the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and more than 70 other partner organizations in a multi-stakeholder, multi-sectoral program highlighting innovative strategies and effective principles to accelerate the emergence of dynamic leadership for successful implementation of the SDGs. The overarching objective of the project is to become a catalyst to accelerate the emergence of dynamic leadership for global development.
The project involves consultations with NGOs, nation states, academies, scientific research and educational institutions, business, civil society and youth organizations. In June 2020, 200 experts came together online to identify catalytic strategies spanning all aspects of human security and wellbeing, in order to evolve a global leadership - of people, organizations, ideas and the right types of systems, measures, movements and networks. This was followed up by a two-day conference in December 2020. IAP was represented in both events.
An Interim Report based on the research and conference findings was submitted to UNOG: http://worldacademy.org/report/gl21-phase-1-interim-report.
The project will culminate in a final report to the United Nations, followed by educational and other outreach strategies based on the learnings from the GL-21 project. More information can be found on the WAAS site http://worldacademy.org/gl-geneva/.
