IAP Contributes to Advancing Global Molecular Biology Education

Held in Heidelberg, Germany, on 16–17 June, the meeting explored next steps toward global collaboration in science education.

Peter McGrath, Coordinator of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), joined a distinguished group of international scientists and educators in Heidelberg, Germany, on 16-17 June 2025 to further efforts toward building a Global Alliance for Molecular Biology Education.

Hosted by the AbeItaly Foundation and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, the meeting was attended by representatives from UNESCO, Harvard University, Siemens Stiftung, the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) and other leading institutions, the meeting followed an earlier gathering held in Erice, Italy, and aimed to define concrete next steps to advance a shared global vision for science education, with a focus on molecular biology.

The participants reflected on the societal relevance of molecular biology in today’s world (from public health to environmental sustainability) and emphasised the need to instil a 'scientific habit of mind' through evidence-based, inquiry-driven science education. Discussions centred on developing a key set of 'Big Ideas' (along with misconceptions) in molecular biology, and a working document proposing a framework for international collaboration and policy engagement, along with a proposal to establish a long-term alliance that supports both educators and learners across diverse global contexts.

The initiative recognises that understanding molecular biology - indeed, participants agreed that the broader label of 'molecular life sciences' is more appropriate and accessible - is no longer optional but essential, not only to inspire future scientists, but to empower all citizens with the knowledge to navigate complex scientific issues and decisions, including those relating to their own personal health and the environment in which we live.
