The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is preparing its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) and is inviting early-career researchers from developing countries and countries in transition to apply as Chapter Scientists.
These scientists will work directly with author teams across the IPCC Working Groups, helping to shape the next major global climate assessment.
Opportunity for early-career researchers
The call is coordinated by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) External Activities Unit and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) – organizations with strong track records of supporting science in the Global South.
Successful applicants will:
- Serve for 48 months starting November 2025
- Receive a stipend, equipment, and IT support
- Receive travel and subsistence support to attend two Lead Author Meetings each year
Chapter Scientists are not employees of the IPCC or its Working Groups and will work from their home institutions or a country where they can legally work independently.
Roles & Responsibilities
Chapter Scientists support the Coordinating Lead Authors (CLAs) by:
- Organizing online and in-person author meetings, taking notes, and coordinating communications
- Tracking review comments and assisting with literature reviews, including Indigenous and Local Knowledge sources
- Compiling and editing chapter content, managing references, and ensuring style-guide compliance
- Assisting with figures, tables, data management, and cross-chapter coordination
Applicant Criteria
Candidates must:
- Be citizens of a developing country or economy in transition (per IPCC Country Categories Annexes 2 & 3)
- Hold an advanced university degree related to climate science, impacts, adaptation or mitigation
- Be fluent in written and scientific English
Additional assets include:
- Publications in international journals, participation in national and/or international science activities or policy engagement experience
- Skills in Python or R, statistical analysis, workflow automation, Git/GitHub
- Experience with GIS tools, Big Data platforms, or document integration tools
- Knowledge of additional languages
Applications from women scientists, and citizens of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) or Small Island Developing States (SIDS), are strongly encouraged.
