Cairo, Egypt – 8–11 December 2025 – Italy played a central role at the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) Triennial Conference in Cairo, bringing together scientists and researchers from 68 countries for four days of dialogue and collaboration in advancing global science. The conference combined high-level sessions, thematic panels and side events to explore the societal impact of science, science diplomacy and international cooperation.
Opening Ceremony: Italy’s Long-Standing Support for IAP
At the opening ceremony on 8 December, Domenico De Martinis, Scientific Attaché at the Embassy of Italy in Egypt, highlighted Italy’s long-term support for IAP. He noted that Italy’s contributions have provided a solid foundation in Trieste, enabling international programs and strengthening IAP’s global initiatives. De Martinis also emphasized the scientific ecosystem in Trieste, home to international organizations, research institutions and universities, and one of Europe’s most densely populated areas for scientific research. Trieste was named European Capital of Science in 2020, reflecting its role as a hub of scientific excellence.
High-Level Session: Science Diplomacy and Strategic Cooperation
On 11 December, Maria Michela Laroccia, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Egypt, represented Italy at a session with top government and scientific leaders, including Mostafa Kamal Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt. She highlighted Italy’s commitment to science and research as tools for societal development and economic growth. Laroccia emphasized Italy’s financial and scientific support for IAP and its role in hosting the IAP Secretariat in Trieste. She also marked 50 years of Italy-Egypt scientific cooperation and Egypt’s recent accession as an associated member of the EU Horizon Europe programme.
Both speakers highlighted the role of science and academia as channels for dialogue and cooperation between nations. They underlined Italy’s commitment to supporting initiatives through bilateral engagement, international frameworks and its global network of scientific attachés, fostering innovation and cross-border partnerships.
A Milestone Year for Italy-Egypt Collaboration
The conference also celebrated the 50-year partnership in science and technology between Italy and Egypt, reflecting decades of collaboration in research and education. Italy’s presence throughout the conference demonstrated its dedication to strengthening ties with Egypt, advancing the global agenda for science and enhancing the impact of IAP locally and internationally.
Hosted by the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the conference featured more than 90 speakers across 18 sessions, panels and side events, exploring topics including trust in science, gender equality, emerging technologies and cross-sector collaboration.
