- Sudanese National Academy of Science organized a conference for young scientists at the Institute of Endemic Diseases in Omdurman, Sudan, 17-18 January 2009 in collaboration with SAYS (The Sudanese Academy of Young Scientists). For more information, see: says.9f.com

- Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei: The G8+5 Academies' Meeting 2009  is a meeting of the science academies of the G8 countries and five others (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa) organized every year by the academy of the country hosting the G8 Summit. In 2009 Italy hosts the G8 Summit. The preliminary Meeting of Academies will be organized by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei from 26-27 March 2009 in Rome. The key topics will be: 1) New technologies for the production and conservation of energy; 2) International migration flows. The participating academies plan to release two joint statements to be presented to the G8 Summit through the Italian Government. For information on the event contact: mze@lincei.it

- IAP and the Council of Canadian Academies hosted an "Inter Academy Workshop on Best Practices in Advisory Roles and Fellowship Appointments" in Trieste, Italy on 12-13 February 2009. This invitation-only meeting explored the evolving role of science academies; fellowship appointments and engaging youth; outreach to society; multilateral initiatives; engaging decision makers; and the advisory role of science academies. The workshop provided the 60 confirmed participants from 46 countries with an opportunity to share best practices and identify opportunities for mutually beneficial collaborations. The recommendations and workshop report will be available shortly.

- The Royal Society/Pfizer Prize: Nominations can be made by senior academics and members of National Academies of Science. Nominations consist of statements from the nominator outlining the candidate’s scientific record, suitability for the award and impact in Africa, and a proposal by the nominee for the research project on which to spend the grant.   For full details of this award and the online nomination forms visit www.royalsociety.org/pfizer.
