Peer Review Open for Independent Scientific Study on Synthetic Biology

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) invites Parties, governments, indigenous peoples, youth and women’s organizations and other stakeholders to participate in the peer review of an independent scientific study on synthetic biology.

The study compiles existing research, funding priorities and roadmaps for synthetic biology applications relevant to achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly Targets 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, and 17. It was commissioned following decision 16/21 of the Conference of the Parties and conducted by the Brazilian Association of Bioinnovation and the SENAI Institutes of Innovation in Biodiversity, Circular Economy, Biosynthetics, and Fibers.

All comments must be submitted using the provided template through the Biosafety Clearing-House portal by 13 April 2026, accompanied by an endorsement letter from the National Focal Point to the CBD or the Head of the organization.

The study and submission instructions are available here: CBD Synthetic Biology Study

This peer review is a key step in ensuring the scientific robustness and global relevance of synthetic biology research for biodiversity and sustainability.
