Scientific Excellence Sought in Nominations for IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel

Academies and networks are invited to help identify top scientific talent for key IPBES advisory panel.

The IAP encourages its global network to support the ongoing call for nominations to the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

On 19 May 2025, the IPBES Secretariat issued a formal notification (EM/2025/24) inviting IPBES member governments to submit nominations for MEP membership by 30 September 2025.

The MEP plays a central scientific and technical role in the functioning of IPBES. It is tasked with defining the scope and methodology of assessments, selecting experts to implement the IPBES work programme, maintaining scientific quality across deliverables and providing technical guidance across various activities of the Platform.

The scientific excellence of MEP members (across a broad spectrum of natural and social science disciplines relevant to biodiversity and ecosystem services), is fundamental to the success of IPBES. Further information on the Panel’s mandate and the nomination criteria can be found in the guidance note.

The current MEP will complete its term at the twelfth session of the IPBES Plenary (IPBES-12), scheduled to take place from 3-8 February 2026. In accordance with Rule 26 of the IPBES rules of procedure, candidates must be nominated by IPBES members, after which regional consultations will be held and elections conducted during the Plenary.

IAP calls on its affiliated academies and networks to disseminate this opportunity widely within national, regional and international scientific communities. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the national focal point of an IPBES member country (typically their country of nationality or residence), to express interest in being nominated. A full list of national focal points is available on the IPBES website here.
