UNESCO has issued a call inviting National Academies of Sciences to nominate candidates for the Jury of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences, one of the Organization’s flagship recognitions for excellence in the basic sciences.
Established in 2019 by UNESCO Member States, the Prize is awarded annually to two scientists in recognition of outstanding achievements in research, education and international cooperation in the basic sciences. It aims to highlight scientific contributions in chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology that have a transformative impact at regional or global level. Each laureate receives a financial award, a gold medal and a certificate signed by the UNESCO Director-General.
UNESCO is now seeking nominations for members of the Prize Jury. National Academies are invited to propose senior experts with strong international reputations in the basic sciences, including candidates with interdisciplinary experience. Particular attention is requested for nominations of women scientists.
The Jury plays a key role in reviewing nominations and recommending candidates for selection by the UNESCO Director-General. Members are appointed for a two-year term and are expected to reflect geographical diversity and scientific excellence.
Nominations should include a short biography, full CV and photograph and must be submitted by 30 May 2026 to mendeleevprize@unesco.org.
This call offers an opportunity for the global scientific community to contribute directly to the recognition of excellence in fundamental science and to support international cooperation in research and innovation. Learn more here.
