The Academy of Athens is Greece’s highest academic and research institution and the country’s official national academy. Established in 1926 and inspired by the historic legacy of Plato’s Academy, its mission is to promote the sciences, humanities, arts, as well as moral and political thought.

As an independent public institution, the Academy contributes to the formulation of positions on issues of national importance through scientifically documented expertise and advisory work, supporting the Greek State in matters related to science, education, culture, and public policy.

The Academy is organized into three Sections — Natural Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts, and Moral and Political Sciences — whose Regular Members are elected for life on the basis of their internationally recognized contribution to science and culture.

As the official representative of Greece in major international academic and scientific organizations, the Academy maintains an active presence in leading international networks and collaborations, contributing to global scientific dialogue and international research cooperation.

At the same time, it supervises important research centres and institutes, develops internationally recognized publishing activity, and awards prizes, distinctions, and scholarships that promote scientific excellence and intellectual achievement.

Through its enduring presence and mission, the Academy of Athens stands as a symbol of Greece’s intellectual heritage and its continuous contribution to global science, thought, and culture.
