National Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica (ANC)

The National Academy of Sciences (Academia Nacional de Ciencias, ANC) was created by a Presidential Executive Decree in 1992, and ratified in 1995 by the law No.7544 promulgated by the Costa Rican Congress as a non governmental institution of public interest. It has the mission to advise all branches of the Costa Rican Government in the areas of science and technology, to promote scientific and technological research initiatives and to be a multidisciplinary forum of permanent scientific discussion, with an emphasis on the global advance of science and a focus on the solution to national problems. Academicians shall be those scientists who have contributed significantly to the development of science.
In addition, the Academy manages the Top Level Domain (TLD) of Internet for Costa Rica through a specialized service unit under the name of “NIC (Network Information Center) Costa Rica”. NIC Costa Rica is responsible for the Neutral Internet Traffic Exchange Point (CRIX) and also coordinates the Internet Advisory Council (IAC) which is a world referent in Internet Governance.
