Megat Mohamad Amirul Amzar Bin Megat Hashim
Biography

Dr. Amirul Amzar is a Family Medicine Specialist and health communicator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his leadership role at University Malaya Medical Centre’s (UMMC) Primary Care Clinic, he led the introduction of an appointment-based clinic system that allows patients to book visits two working days in advance. This system provides patients with greater flexibility while enabling the clinic to better regulate patient flow. As a result, waiting times have been reduced, patient satisfaction has improved, and a more structured and supportive training environment has been created for family medicine specialist trainees and medical students.

Beyond clinical service innovation, Dr. Amirul Amzar is deeply committed to community engagement. He spearheads HOPE@PPUM (Hospital Outreach Programme & Education), a large-scale outreach initiative that delivers health screenings, medical consultations, and health education to communities across Malaysia. Through mobile clinics operating in multiple states, the programme offers essential services such as blood pressure monitoring, glucose screening, and preventive health education. HOPE@PPUM is built on a culturally sensitive approach that recognises trust, respect, and meaningful engagement as the foundation of equitable healthcare. The programme’s impact was formally recognised when University Malaya Medical Centre received an Excellence Award for Best in Community Involvement at the Asian Hospital Management Awards 2025.

Dr. Amirul Amzar’s scholarly and advocacy work focuses on health communication and health behaviour, particularly in addressing the growing challenge of health misinformation. He recognises that misinformation on social media poses a significant threat to public health and actively promotes evidence-based, empathetic communication strategies. Perspectives from primary care highlight that physicians require both training and practical tools to counter misinformation effectively, as well as collaboration with health communication experts to deliver clear, tailored messages. Dr. Amirul Amzar translates these principles into practice by using social media platforms and community-based workshops to correct misinformation, foster critical thinking, and encourage healthier behaviours.

Recognising the importance of vaccine literacy, he founded the Vaccine Communication Training Workshop (VaCT). What began as a local initiative within UMMC has since expanded and is now being adopted at national and regional levels. VaCT equips healthcare professionals with practical communication skills to address vaccine hesitancy, strengthen public confidence, and clearly articulate the benefits of immunisation. Through this work, Dr. Amirul Amzar continues to integrate health communication science into real-world public health practice and professional education.

As a Young Physician Leaders (YPL) alumnus, Dr. Amirul Amzar has also developed a leadership module (Healthcare Workers as Effective Leaders, HOWL) aimed at helping young healthcare leaders grow more confident and effective in leadership roles. Grounded in emotional intelligence, ambidextrous leadership styles, and practical leadership tools, the module focuses on driving systematic change while maintaining empathy and professionalism. Through this effort, he contributes to nurturing a new generation of healthcare leaders capable of building more efficient, compassionate, and resilient health systems.
