Biography

Professor Nelson K. Sewankambo is a physician, clinical epidemiologist, and academic leader with over four decades of experience in medicine, research, and higher education. He is a Professor of Medicine and former Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences, where he led transformative reforms in health professional education and research capacity development. A Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences, he has served on multiple international advisory boards, including those of WHO and the Global Forum for Health Research. His scholarly work focuses on health systems, urban health, and the social determinants of health in Africa. He has led multi-country initiatives on urban governance, resilience, and health equity, and continues to advise regional and national bodies on the interface between science, policy, and development. Professor Sewankambo is widely recognized for bridging the gap between academic rigor and policy relevance, ensuring that research translates into action for healthier and more equitable societies.
