Biography

Professor Olubukola Oluranti Babalola (Pr.Sci.Nat, MASSAF, FASLP, FAAS, MAAAS, FAS, FTWAS, FISC, FRSB) is a world-acclaimed research scientist recognised for her impactful leadership in science and research, particularly in advancing food security and supporting women in STEM fields. She serves as Vice-President of the World Academy of Sciences (UNESCO-TWAS) and was the former Vice President of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (UNESCO-OWSD) for Africa. She plays a vital role as the Foreign Secretary of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), and the Think Tank of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA). An honorary visiting Professor at Imperial College London, she is ranked #1 in Africa for Soil Science and Plant Nutrition.

Her research focuses on rhizosphere meta-omics, organic amendments, fertilisation, drought stress, and parasitic weeds, all aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture. With a PhD supported by IITA and OWSD, and postdoctoral stints at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) and University of the Western Cape (South Africa), she has made lasting contributions to science. Through advocacy and innovation, she actively promotes SDG#2, Zero Hunger, positively impacting farmers, women, and food systems, leaving an indelible mark on capacity building. With an impressive portfolio boasting over 450 articles and a remarkable 22-year tenure specialising in rhizosphere microbiome research, Olubukola's commitment to nurturing talent is exceptional.

Notably, Olubukola has mentored 37 PhDs and 27 MScs, many of whom have ascended to academic positions in prestigious universities across Africa, America, and Europe. This investment in the next generation ensures the perpetuation and dissemination of knowledge acquired through Professor Babalola's endeavours, transcending geographical boundaries and enriching global scientific discourse.
