Peter-Paul Verbeek

Biography
Peter-Paul Verbeek (b. 1970) is Rector Magnificus of the University of Amsterdam and Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Science and Technology in a Changing World. A distinguished scholar of human–technology relations, he previously served as professor at the University of Twente and chaired the UNESCO World Commission for the Ethics of Science and Technology.
An active member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has chaired The Young Academy and the Academy’s Committee for the Freedom of Scientific Pursuit. As incoming President of the Academy from 1 September, Verbeek aims to strengthen the position of science and scholarship in society and to further highlight their value and societal impact.
