Biography

Dr. Wibool Piyawattanametha is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Advanced Imaging Research Center at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Thailand, and an Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University (MSU), USA. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 2004 and previously served as a Senior Scientist at Stanford University’s Bio-X Program.

With over 4,000 citations, an h-index of 30, and more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Piyawattanametha’s research focuses on AI, MEMS, photonics, and biomedical imaging for early cancer detection. He is a Fellow of the International Science Council (ISC) and the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), and serves as Senior Editor of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters.

He was honored with the Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He was recognized among the Top 40 Young Scientists under 40 by the World Economic Forum for his leadership at the intersection of science, innovation, and global policy. A co-founding member and ex-executive member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), he continues to champion scientific collaboration and responsible innovation worldwide.

Dr. Piyawattanametha is also the founder of DeepPap, Inc. and DeepMam, Inc.. These two startups develop AI-driven diagnostic platforms for ultra-fast whole-slide imaging and the early detection of cervical and breast cancers. His multidisciplinary work bridges advanced imaging, artificial intelligence, and open science to advance equitable and sustainable health innovation globally.
