For the second time, ISTIC (the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO) and the Future University teamed up to organise a workshop on “IBSE for Science Educators from African Countries”, supported by TWAS and the Federal and State Ministries of Sudan. This workshop aimed to promote Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE). Both the Federal and State Ministries of Education selected teachers and teacher trainers from across Sudan to participate in the event. They joined international trainees from countries such as South Africa, Cape Verde, Kenya and Egypt and ISTIC-selected trainers from Malaysia and the Philippines to learn new techniques in IBSE methods and take these back to their respective educational institutions. The programme lasted for five days.
In conjunction with the Workshop, Future University and ISTIC organized a Roundtable to promote Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE), which provided the opportunity for highlighting IAP activities at a regional level implemented both by the IAP Science Education Programme (SEP) and by NASAC (The Network of African Science Academies). Speakers in the IBSE Roundtable included Dr. Bruce Alberts, Prof. M. Hassan, Prof. Y. Quere and Dato Ir. Dr. Lee Yee Cheong. The Federal Minister of General Education, Sudan, H.E. Mrs. Soad Abdelrazig was in attendance.
