The Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS), established in 2014 under the mentorship of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), is India’s sole officially recognized platform dedicated to young scientists. INYAS was created with a forward-looking vision: to empower early-career researchers, foster leadership in science, and promote meaningful engagement between scientists and society.

Since its inception, INYAS has consistently demonstrated its commitment to science communication, public outreach, and capacity-building. The academy operates through a cohort-based leadership model, enabling its members to actively participate in decision-making, lead initiatives, and gain experience in scientific advocacy and community engagement. Each year, a new group of young scientists joins the academy, contributing fresh ideas and energy while benefiting from the mentorship of existing members.

A key focus of INYAS has been its outreach efforts aimed at making science more accessible to diverse segments of society. The academy has organized science camps, awareness programs, and lectures in underserved and remote regions, fostering scientific curiosity among students and the general public. During the COVID-19 pandemic, INYAS responded swiftly by shifting to digital platforms. It hosted a series of webinars, virtual awareness campaigns, and online learning events to ensure the continued dissemination of accurate and relevant scientific information during a time of global uncertainty.

To further expand its reach, INYAS established seven regional chapters across India, which have now transitioned into 10 Zones: National Capital Region, North, North-Central, Central, East, North-East, West, West-Central, South, South-East. These zones act as decentralized hubs for regional collaboration, localized outreach, and science promotion activities. They also coordinate with the respective INSA local chapters to synergize efforts and maximize impact on the ground.

INYAS actively collaborates with national institutions and scientific bodies to organize joint events and thematic programs. These partnerships help amplify outreach, support interdisciplinary dialogue, and contribute to national scientific development. Members also engage in science policy by participating in surveys, drafting reports, and serving on advisory committees.

Internationally, INYAS plays an important role in connecting Indian young scientists with global counterparts. As a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), it takes part in international conferences, leadership workshops, and collaborative initiatives. INYAS is a member of International Science Council (ISC) and its members have been contributed to their activities, representing Indian perspectives on global platforms and engaging in joint activities with other national young academies, such as the trilateral meetings held in Berlin and other international forums. INYAS is co-hosting the GYA Annual General Body meeting of GYA this year at IIT Hyderabad, along with IIT Hyderabad, INSA and Government of Telangana.

Over the past decade, INYAS has evolved into a strong, inclusive, and action-oriented community. It provides young researchers with opportunities to lead, collaborate, and drive science-based societal change. By nurturing leadership and promoting responsible science, INYAS continues to uphold its mission of making science more participatory, impactful, and globally connected.
