The 4th Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Symposium of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, bringing together scientists, policymakers and science leaders from across the region to discuss the role of women in advancing science and sustainable development.
A major highlight of the symposium was the launch of the new publication, 'Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Advancing SDGs in Asia'. Produced by the AASSA Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Committee with support from the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the book highlights the contributions of women scientists, engineers and educators to sustainable development across Asia.
The publication showcases women leaders whose work advances five key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9) and Climate Action (SDG 13). Through personal stories and professional achievements, it demonstrates how women in STEM are addressing pressing societal challenges, advancing scientific progress, strengthening education and developing solutions that support sustainable development.
Featuring contributors from a broad range of disciplines, countries and career stages, the book reflects the diversity and impact of women's contributions to science and technology across the region. It also underscores the importance of increasing the visibility and leadership of women in STEM, recognizing gender equality as both a Sustainable Development Goal and a foundation for wider social and economic progress.
The symposium provided an important platform for exchanging perspectives on gender equity in science and exploring ways to strengthen women's participation and leadership in research and innovation. Discussions examined how scientific institutions, governments and academic communities can work together to build more inclusive scientific ecosystems and create opportunities for future generations of women scientists.
The symposium materials are now publicly available. Readers can access the digital edition of Women in STEM: Advancing SDGs in Asia, download the programme book and watch recordings of both the morning and afternoon sessions online. These resources provide valuable insights into ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in science and highlight the achievements of women who are helping shape the future of research, innovation and sustainable development.
IAP congratulates AASSA, the WISE Committee, the editors and all contributors on the successful symposium and the publication of this important volume, which stands as both a record of progress and a source of inspiration for current and future generations of women scientists across Asia and beyond.
