Every organization or group of people from all over the world is invited by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.
The year will officially open on 8 July 2022 with the opening ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The official closing ceremony will be held at the end of June 2023. However, any event, program or initiative held in the first part of 2022 will be eligible to be part of the official IYBSSD2022 and to use IYBSSD2022 logo.
An updated schedule of events all over the world, will be kept on the website https://www.iybssd2022.org/ and information about them will be shared through social media accounts, a newsletter and press releases.
Who can approve an event, a program, or an initiative to be included in the official IYBSSD2022 program?
- Basic sciences
Research pursued for the advancement of fundamental knowledge without preconceived application in mind, or curiosity driven research.
- Sustainable development
The United Nations Agenda 2030 defines sustainable development through 17 Sustainable Development Goals. An event, a program, or an initiative within IYBSSD2022 must be related to at least two of these SDGs.
All types of people, for whatever differences, must be included as much as possible in the project from the very beginning. The very meaning of inclusivity will vary depending of the place, context and goals.
- Open access
Events, programs, and initiatives approved by IYBSSD2022 must share any outcome with the license CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.
What else is strongly recommended about an event, a program, or an initiative included in the official IYBSSD2022 program?
Scientists from different fields should be associated (human and social sciences included).
- Discuss science
IYBSSD2022 should be an opportunity to improve the role of science in the public debate, with a better information of the public and of policy makers, and with a self-reflection from scientists about the way they do and share science.
