Biography

Professor Alhousseïni Bretaudau, born on 1st January 1954 in Ménaka, Mali, is a distinguished agronomist and academic. A Malian national, he is married and a father of three.

Professor Bretaudeau holds a Doctorat de Troisième Cycle in Agronomic Sciences (specialising in Phytotechnics) from the University of Sciences and Technology of Languedoc (USTL), Montpellier, awarded in December 1983. He previously earned a DEA in Agronomic Sciences from the same institution in 1981, an engineering degree from IPR/IFRA Katibougou, Mali in 1977, and a Baccalauréat in Biological Sciences from the Franco-Arab Lycée of Timbuktu in 1974.

Fluent in French, with intermediate proficiency in English, Professor Bretaudeau has made significant contributions to agricultural research and education in Mali and the Sahel region.

He has served as a Professor at the IPR/IFRA in Katibougou, University of Mali, since 1984, combining his academic work with consultancy roles. From 2007 to 2013, he was the Executive Secretary of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS). In 2023, he was appointed Perpetual Secretary of the Academy of Sciences of Mali, of which he is a founding member and former Deputy Permanent Secretary.

Professor Bretaudeau has been recognised with numerous honours, including the distinction of Grand Officer of the National Order of Mali (2015), Commander of the Niger Order of Merit (2013), and Chevalier of the International Order of Academic Palms of CAMES (2003). In 2000, he received a medal from the World Intellectual Property Organisation for his contributions to agricultural innovation, notably the development of an improved sorghum variety.

His scientific achievements include the development of 16 registered sorghum varieties, including drought-resistant strains, and over twenty scientific publications in the field of agronomy.
