Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Advancing SDGs in Asia is a publication of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) that highlights the contributions of women scientists, engineers and educators to sustainable development across the Asian region.
Produced by the AASSA Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Committee, the book showcases women leaders whose work advances five key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9) and Climate Action (SDG 13).
Through personal stories and professional achievements, the publication demonstrates how women in STEM are addressing major societal challenges, advancing scientific progress, strengthening education, promoting gender equality and developing solutions that support sustainable development. The featured scientists represent a wide range of disciplines, countries and career paths, reflecting the depth of women's contributions to science and technology across Asia.
Beyond celebrating individual accomplishments, the book emphasizes the importance of increasing the visibility and leadership of women in STEM. It highlights that gender equality is both a Sustainable Development Goal and a prerequisite for broader social and economic progress.
Supported by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and developed in collaboration with member academies and scientific societies across the region, the publication serves as both a recognition of achievement and a call for continued action. It encourages institutions, policymakers and future generations to strengthen support for women in STEM and to build a more inclusive and sustainable future for Asia.
