The unfolding emergencies: Ethiopia and Myanmar

The first webinar of the Science in Exile webinar series is part of the celebrations of the 2021 World Refugee Day, under the theme “Together we learn”.

The webinar will explore the impact of the unfolding emergency in Myanmar and the Tigray region of Ethiopia on scientists and science, hearing first-hand from local scholars and from experts on short-term strategies to uphold science and higher education in times of crisis.

The webinar series will be inaugurated by Prof. Romain Murenzi, Executive Director, UNESCO-TWAS.

The webinar will be chaired by Sena Galazzi, Associate Programme Officer, UNESCO-TWAS, and will feature:

  • Dr Phyu Phyu Thin Zaw, Lecturer, School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, Hong Kong University
  • Dr Kebede Kassa Tsegaye, Senior Program Coordinator, Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)
  • Dr Khin Mar Mar Kyi, Senior Research Fellow, International Gender Studies, University of Oxford
  • Tual Sawn Khai, PhD student, Lingnan University, Hong Kong
