The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) is proud to announce the release of its Annual Report for 2023, showcasing a year of significant achievements, impactful initiatives and strengthened global collaborations. This report reflects IAP’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that science serves society inclusively and equitably, and underpins global sustainable development.
Empowering Future Leaders and Building Capacity
Throughout 2023, IAP continued to empower the world’s academies to provide evidence-based advice to policymakers at global, regional, and national levels. Our capacity-building initiatives have fostered stronger regional networks, while also supporting national academies, especially in low- and middle-income countries, to engage with key stakeholders on critical issues. Notably, a series of webinars and our Biosecurity Working Group highlight our dedication to enhancing the global scientific community's capacity to address pressing challenges.
Promoting Science Advice and Ethical Practices
IAP remains a key player in providing independent, authoritative advice on complex global issues. In 2023, we contributed to the newly constituted UN Scientific Advisory Board and published a joint statement with the International Science Council (ISC) on the autonomy of academies of science. Our ongoing projects, such as the ‘Climate Change and Health’ initiative and the ‘Decarbonisation of Transport’ report, continue to influence global and regional policies, emphasizing the role of science in sustainable development.
Expanding Education and Outreach
IAP’s education and outreach activities have furthered the promotion of inquiry-based science education (IBSE) and supported the professional development of young scientists and medical professionals. Highlights include the successful triennial conference of the IAP Science Education Programme in Morocco and the continued nurturing of the Young Physician Leaders (YPL) network, which brought together outstanding young physicians from across the globe at the World Health Summit in Berlin.
Strengthening the Global Network
The IAP network has become more resilient and progressive, with significant advancements in governance, communications and member engagement. Our communications strategy has expanded our reach, with a substantial increase in website traffic and social media followers. Additionally, the IAP Board and Advisory Committee's meeting in Rome laid the groundwork for future initiatives that will continue to drive our mission forward.
