On 4 November 2024, IAP hosted a webinar titled “The Role of Stakeholders in the Global Fight Against Predatory Practices”. This event brought together more than 120 participants from universities and academies, among other stakeholders, with large representations from Lithuania and South Africa. During the 90-minute webinar, they discussed critical insights into combatting predatory academic journals and conferences. The event was organized with the RESCUE Consortium, a collaborative initiative by the Benin Young Academy of Science, Czech Academy of Sciences and Indian National Young Academy of Science supported through a grant from IAP.
The webinar highlighted case studies from Benin, the Czech Republic and India, and showcased diverse efforts to educate stakeholders. These efforts ranged from workshops for graduate students, discussions with local publishers and tailored trainings for librarians. In addition to the panel presentations, participants took the opportunity to engage in a lively discussion. Topics discussed included the impact of AI on the predatory journal landscape, practical information on managing publications in predatory journals, and how global stakeholders can adapt local practices. Resources for the librarian training can be found here.
Participants gained valuable perspectives on how local actions can drive global engagement to curb unethical academic publishing practices. If you missed the event or would like to revisit the discussions, the webinar recording is now available here:
