This publication presents a summary of the talks from the Conference 'Women in STEM', the 3rd AASSA-WISE SCJ Symposium, held in a hybrid format at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (IPMU), University of Tokyo, from August 4 to 6, 2025. The symposium brought together researchers, policymakers and leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond to discuss the current status of women in STEM and to share initiatives supporting their participation, visibility and leadership.
The contributions in this volume highlight a wide range of national and regional perspectives on gender equity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Speakers addressed challenges faced by women researchers such as career progression barriers, underrepresentation in leadership, work-life balance and disparities in research and development systems. They also showcased strategies, policy reforms, mentoring models, community-building efforts and institutional practices that are helping to empower women in STEM.
Covering countries including Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Nepal, India, Russia, Bangladesh and Japan, the proceedings emphasize both shared challenges and solutions specific to each context. The talks highlight the importance of sustained networks, collaboration across borders and evidence-based approaches in creating inclusive and diverse scientific communities.
This volume aims to be a practical resource for researchers, educators and policymakers. By offering insights from across Asia and beyond, it provides guidance and inspiration for promoting gender equity in science worldwide.
