The 'International Conference on Science and Technology for Sustainability' has been held annually since 2003 by the Science Council of Japan.

The SCJ represents Japan’s science community encompassing humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences and engineering. The International Conference on Science and Technology for Sustainability is a crucial part of the SCJ's efforts to study the design and realization of a sustainable society.

2023 marked the 100th commemoration of the Great Kanto Earthquake, and was the midpoint for implementation of both the Sendai Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme of this year’s conference is 'Transforming Society to Become Resilient and Sustainable beyond Catastrophic Disasters'. According to the WMO (World Meteorological Organization), the number of weather, climate and water-related disasters has increased five-fold in the past 50 years and has become more serious than ever.
